Indian Railways has announced significant changes to the Tatkal ticket booking system in an effort to protect the interests of actual customers and provide equitable and transparent access to Tatkal tickets. The purpose of these modifications is to improve user authentication and lessen scheme abuse.

The following are the new provisions:

1. Online Tatkal Reservations Using Aadhaar Authentication: Tatkal tickets purchased via IRCTC’s official website and mobile app will only be accessible to individuals who have successfully authenticated with Aadhaar as of July 1, 2025. Furthermore, starting on July 15, 2025, online Tatkal reservations will require Aadhaar-based OTP authentication.

2. OTP Authentication System-Based at PRS Counters and Agents: OTP authentication will be delivered to the mobile number the user provided at the time of booking for Tatkal tickets purchased through authorized agents and at computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Additionally, this clause will take effect on July 15, 2025.

3. Authorized Agents’ Booking Time Restrictions: Authorized Indian Railways ticketing agencies will not be allowed to purchase opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first half hour of the booking window in order to avoid large reservations during the crucial opening period. This restriction is in effect for classes with air conditioning from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM and for sessions without air conditioning from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

These adjustments are being made to increase Tatkal bookings’ transparency and guarantee that the program’s advantages are received by actual end users.

CRIS and IRCTC have been instructed to make necessary system modifications and inform all Zonal Railways and concerned departments accordingly.

The Ministry of Railways urges all passengers to take note of these changes and encourages everyone to ensure Aadhaar linkage with their IRCTC user profiles to avoid inconvenience.
