India initiated “Operation Sindoor” in retaliation for the terrorist assault in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, predominantly tourists.

In a significant diplomatic move, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reached out to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, emphasizing the United States’ close monitoring of escalating tensions in South Asia. Rubio reiterated America’s commitment to regional peace and stability, urging both India and Pakistan to engage in dialogue to reduce hostilities.

The outreach follows India’s launch of “Operation Sindoor,” a series of targeted strikes in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Punjab, which India claims neutralized over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Pakistan has denied initiating any attacks, accusing India of violating its sovereignty and disturbing regional peace. Prime Minister Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to safeguard its territorial integrity, citing the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

In a related development, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed an all-party meeting that the operation was ongoing and that India would respond decisively to any further provocations. The meeting underscored national unity in the fight against terrorism, with leaders expressing support for the government’s actions and commitment to national security.

As the situation remains tense, global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, have offered to mediate, urging both nations to step back from the brink of war and engage in meaningful dialogue to prevent further escalation.

Rubio stressed the need for tensions to be de-escalated in his conversation with S. Jaishankar, India’s minister of external affairs, on Thursday. Additionally, he stated that the United States is in favor of direct communication between the two Asian countries. Jaishankar wrote on social media site X: “This evening, I spoke with US @SecRubio. greatly value the US’s dedication to assisting India in the fight against terrorism. Highlighted India’s methodical and focused response to transnational terrorism. will adamantly oppose any escalation attempts,” Jaishankar continued.

According to news agency PTI, which cited Radio Pakistan, Rubio spoke with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif over the phone earlier on Thursday about the changing circumstances in the area. As part of its commitment to advancing peace and security in the region, the United States is keeping a careful eye on the situation in South Asia, Rubio stated.
According to the article, “he also emphasized the need for both India and Pakistan to work closely to de-escalate the situation.” The article also stated that the United States and Pakistan agreed to stay in contact.

At a media briefing on Thursday, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that Pakistan’s escalation will be addressed and is being  replied to suitably.
